The Cricket Security Whitepaper

How to Implement Anti-Social Behaviour Protection and Security Measures

Cricket clubs are vibrant community hubs, important to cultural heritage and wellbeing. However, they are also prone to a variety of risks; from theft to vandalism. Never are they more at risk than during winter, where some cricket clubs are left for weeks maybe months at a time without attention.

Winter lockdown – where cricket clubs lock away their equipment and leave the premises for months at a time – has been identified as a prime area for theft and vandalism. Security of the premises and machinery needs to be prioritised, at all times of year, but especially winter.

Risk of theft and vandalism is ever-present for local clubs. Club Insure have listed actionable objectives towards cricket club security, detailed within the document below.

Club Insure’s Cricket Security Whitepaper

The whitepaper outlines the many ways in which cricket clubs can act to deter potential thieves and vandals. These changes will, in the long run, save money by reducing costs such as losses and claim costs.

This whitepaper is endorsed by Mark Dearden, The Cricket Scheme Manager at Club Insure. He writes:  “The majority of cricket clubs are less active over winter and are more vulnerable to theft and malicious damage. There are many ways in which cricket clubs can reduce risks. The following outlines some of the measures available to clubs, as well as a case study from one of our clients.”

The whitepaper includes a case study, providing real time examples of how to improve cricket ground security.

A representative showed us around their cricket ground premises, explaining the measures they’ve taken to improve security. This includes gated security for their practice area and nets, reinforced security for their scorebox and their CCTV.

All cricket clubs should consider implementing these examples as they are popular changes among all forms of sports clubs and, indeed, social clubs.

We have detailed the meet and greet with our local cricket ground representative here:

Thieves and vandals will see cricket clubs as an open buffet of high-value machinery and equipment. The most popular equipment we see claims for include:

  • Bowling machines
  • Fitness and Coaching materials
  • Pitch and outfield mowers
  • Crease and Line marking equipment
  • Boundary markers and ropes
  • Pitch rollers – hand and motorised
  • Sightscreens & mobile pitch covers
  • First Aid equipment including defibrillators
  • Wines and spirits

An asset register is an inventory of all the club’s owned contents and equipment. It should also note how much each piece is worth, which will help to understand the total value of your club’s assets. Asset registers are used by insurers to calculate the overall value of your club in the event of a claim, such as a fire or flood. Learn more about cricket clubs asset registers here.

  • Security locks on doors and windows – Make a process where a responsible person opens up and locks down every day.
  • Lock away trophies and valuables – Trophies are a target, secure them from trespassers who are likely to strike during the day.
  • Fences and perimeter defence – Protect your border, review the fencing and gates. Security gates should be installed as well as bollards to protect cars and bikes from entering the premises.
  • Effective alarm systems – The clubhouse, scorebox and equipment shed need to be connected to the main alarm system. Have a responsible person set the alarm every evening.
  • Fire defence systems – Install pyroelectric sensors to detect heat energy. Foam sprays and fire extinguishers should be checked and replaced when necessary.
  • Install extra protection – Tagging of items which can be seen under UV lighting, bandit cages, reinforced metal lockers, each will deter theft. Also fog systems can be installed, they are harmless vapours that fill the room on the activation of an alarm, providing a smokescreen, blocking intruders.

Ensure all of these security measures, as well as any other installations on your premises, are documented and known to your insurance broker. The more security your club is outfitted with, the better chance of imporved terms and the prevention of a costly claim. Keeping close communication with your broker is key.
