The 4 Golden Rules of Cyber Security

What are the need-to-know rules of cyber security?

As a continued focus on making sure your club is protected against growing cyber threats, Club Insure have put together a brief summary of the basics of cyber security. These are the four Golden Rules of cyber security.

By taking these as your first steps to developing a comprehensive cyber security plan, you’ll be on the right path to making sure you, your club and its members all stay safe. And know what to do, if things go wrong.

Rule No.1: Keep your secrets, secret.

Don’t share your personal information online unless you are certain that you’re dealing with a safe website. The best way to tell if the site is safe or not is to look for an ‘s’ in the URL, or web address. An unsafe site will start with http://, whereas a safe site will start with https://. There may also be a padlock in the top left corner, indicating whether your access is secure.

Rule No. 2: Just. Don’t. Click!

Do not click links within emails. Even if you think you know who the email is from. Also, don’t download files. The only exception to the rule is if you are expecting someone to send you a link or a file. If you have spoken with them in person and know where the link will lead or what the file will contain, then it’s okay.

Rule No. 3: Testing, testing, 123.

When major incidents happen, it’s important that you have a plan. There is nothing that can make bad things worse than decision making on the fly. You need to be absolutely sure you have a plan and that the plan is up-to-date, taking into account any changes made since the plan was last tested.

Rule No.4: Two eyes are better than one.

Dual authentication – This is where all purchases require two people to verify a transaction. There would be one point of failure if a club has one person signing off payments without a second pair of eyes, therefore there should always be someone verifying transactions to avoid the risk of scamming.

Start by following these four golden rules to keep you club safe, and you’ll be on the right track.
