Sport Sector Benefits Economy

A study by Sport England has illustrated that growth in sport has outstripped the English economy as a whole – the sector overall was resilient during the recession. Sport is within the top 15 industry sectors in England, having a bigger impact on the economy than telecoms services, car sales and repairs and accounting.

£11.78 billion of sport’s contribution comes from people playing sport and related expenditure such as sports equipment and coaching, while £8.5 billion comes from people’s consumption of sport such as watching elite sport live or on TV, sports-related TV subscriptions and sports gambling. More than 440,000 people have sport-related jobs, accounting for 2.3% of all employment.

Boost for Grassroots Sport

In a massive boost to grassroots sports clubs, Sport England has announced £40 million to extend its hugely popular Inspired Facilities Olympic and Paralympic legacy fund to 2017.

The National Lottery boost comes on the anniversary of the Olympic closing ceremony as 321 sports projects celebrate winning a share of £16,225,446. The latest investments will bring big improvements to local facilities, from new playing surfaces to floodlights and better changing rooms and equipment. 1,361 grassroots sports facilities have seen funding in the two years following the Inspired Facilities was launched, with a total of £69.9 million invested.

Commonwealth Games Ambassadors Chosen

As tickets for the begin to go on sale for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, five elite sports personalities have been unveiled as Official Games Ambassadors and stars of the Games’ Ticketing campaign.

London 2012 gold medallists Jessica Ennis-Hill and Nicola Adams, Olympic and Commonwealth Scottish swimming stars Michael Jamieson and David Carry and Scotland’s most successful Commonwealth Games athlete Allan Wells have all been unveiled as Official Glasgow 2014 Ambassadors. The sports personalities will features on posters and tv advertising to promote the forthcoming games.
