Alarming Rise In Trophy Thefts linked to silver prices

There has been a worrying rise in trophy thefts, alarming sports and social clubs, as well as golf clubs. Raids on multiple golf clubs in Kent saw glass doors smashed and antique trophies stolen. Thousands of pounds worth of silver lost in a single night.

The names of generations of golfers adorn the cups, memories of those lost to time –these trophies are irreplaceable. Break ins are costly, necessitating an insurance claim. Many club’s valuations may suddenly be outdated as silver prices have soared, causing underinsurance.

We are advising all clubs with trophies to hide them for the time being – and review their security measures.

‘Given what we are seeing it’s important to consider whether you’re comfortable with the value of what you have insured is correct. The sum insured amount can be increased with ease; alternatively consider a full professional valuation. I recommend clubs call me to discuss any query.’

Thefts Linked to Rise in Silver and Gold Prices

Today, the price of silver is around £1.90 per gram. Also, the price of gold is 70% higher than at this point last year. Silver average £0.62 per gram in 2020, demonstrating how outdated the valuations of golf club trophies can be.

The price of silver hit a record high in 2025 of £2.50 per gram. The precious metals have seen price rises of over 120% in recent weeks, many blaming geopolitical uncertainties causing investors to stockpile money in ‘safe havens’.

The scrap value of each cup could easily approach £2000. The spoils of a successful raid are greater than ever before, meaning criminals are taking more risks. Standard security measures are often not strong enough to deter thieves. Golf clubs need to review their security measures and protocols in order to best protect their valuables.

Why Golf Clubs should review their insurance

We are urging golf clubs to take a moment to review their insurance policy. Would your insurance cover a multi-thousand pound theft? Would your club survive if it was raided and vandalised?

Many golf clubs should consider getting their silver plates and cups revalued. With the rise in silver and gold, clubs will quickly find themselves underinsured. At Club Insure, we are advising clubs to get in touch and we can easily raise their sums insured.

If you are not sure, please get in touch with your insurance broker. At Club Insure we offer a free confidential review, informing clubs if they are underinsured or have gaps in their cover.
